Evesham's Axis 1800+ TI5 is a PC with a mixed range of features. Inside the case is a Gigabyte GA7V1XH motherboard that houses an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor. This runs at a core speed of 1,533MHz and is supported by 512Mb of DDR memory. The latter is present in the shape of two Dimm modules, leaving space for one more. Both the system's removable media drives are made by Samsung. One is a 16/10/32-speed CD-RW drive with BURN-Proof technology to prevent buffer under-runs during the write process, while the other is a 16-speed DVD-ROM drive. Both are connected to the second IDE channel, the first being occupied by the 100GB, 7,200rpm Western Digital Caviar hard disk drive. Complementing the fast processor, Evesham has equipped the system with a suitably powerful graphics adapter in the shape of LeadTek's WinFast Titanium card, which is based on nVidia's new GeForce3 Ti 500 graphics processor. This connects to the supplied Samsung SyncMaster 170T LCD monitor, which is an appealing 17in screen with good colour consistency and contrast, as well as a native resolution of 1,280 by 1,024 pixels. The display has automatic resolution adjustment, which works reasonably well. Both the card and monitor support DVI-I, so a good quality screen image can be obtained with the appropriate cable. For larger screens, the graphics card also has an S-Video connector alongside its 15-pin D-Sub port. The internal cabling is neat and tidy, so there's plenty of space to add new expansion cards or exchange existing ones. However, although there are two free PCI slots, realistically only one can be used because the second is much too close to the graphics card's cooling fan to be of any practical use. There's space for another 3.5in drive and one more 5.25in drive. The processor's fan is complemented by a second fan mounted inside the back of the case. The onboard sound controller has been disabled in favour of a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy PCI card, which also has a built-in IEEE 6-pin 1394 port. There's onboard 10/100Base-T connectivity in the form of a RealTek PCI card, which supports remote boot and wake-on-local area network operations via its built-in BIOS. Microsoft's Windows XP Professional was supplied, along with a selection of tools including Sun Microsystem's StarOffice, Pinnacle Studio 7.0 and CyberLink's PowerDVD. The system is supported by a three-year parts and labour warranty, the first two years on-site, the third year return-to-base. |
